Environmental Certifications: What They Mean for Your Next Commercial Fitout
Sustainability certification has shifted from a project differentiator to a procurement requirement. Government fit-outs, health infrastructure, and education projects increasingly mandate certified products. Clients in the private sector are following suit.
For architects and designers, that means understanding what certifications actually mean — not just collecting logos for specification documents.
PEFC: what it means for timber sourcing
PEFC stands for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. A PEFC-certified forest is managed to meet strict environmental, social, and economic requirements — protecting biodiversity, ensuring legal harvesting, and maintaining the rights of local communities.
When a product carries PEFC certification, it means the timber in that product has been traced back through the supply chain to a certified, sustainably managed forest. For Modulo® MR and FR, this means the MDF substrate is manufactured from PEFC certified fibreboard sourced from Australian mills.
In a project context, PEFC certified timber helps demonstrate responsible procurement and supports environmental reporting requirements.
Global GreenTag®: what the levels mean
Global GreenTag® is an independent product certification program that evaluates building materials across a range of health, environmental, and sustainability criteria. All Screenwood products have achieved a GreenTag GreenRate™ Level B rating.
GreenRate™ Level B confirms the product meets world-class standards for health and safety, non-eco-toxicity, post-consumer recycled content, and waste reduction.
Green Star credits
Specifying Global GreenTag® certified products contributes to Green Star credit points under the Green Building Council of Australia’s rating system. Using Modulo® on a project can directly support a team pursuing a Green Star certification.
This is increasingly relevant as more clients set sustainability targets for their buildings — and as the broader industry moves toward reporting on embodied carbon and supply chain transparency.

Low VOC and non-PVC: the indoor air quality dimension
Beyond certifications, the NAVURBAN™ decorative film used on Screenwood products is a non-PVC olefin film with low VOC content. This means no off-gassing of harmful compounds into the occupied environment post-installation — an important consideration for spaces with limited ventilation or where vulnerable occupants are present.
