FAQ

Modulo® MR is a prefinished tongue & groove lining system manufactured by Screenwood using Australian made moisture-resistant MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard). The substrate is wrapped in your choice of NAVURBAN™ non-PVC olefin decorative film (available in woodgrain, silky smooth, or metallic finishes). This lining system is designed for versatile interior use—on walls, ceilings, joinery, doors and other decorative features. Because the product arrives prefinished, on-site finishing time is significantly reduced, delivering a visually consistent solution that supports faster project delivery and high finish standards.

Yes — Modulo® MR is engineered to accommodate curved surfaces, both concave and convex. Modulo® MR can be relieved by cutting a 3 mm-wide relief slot into the back of the panel at the locations specified in the Profile Specification Sheets. The specific maximum radius achievable depends on the profile selected; detailed radius information is included in the Profile Specification sheets available on our website. This flexibility allows designers and installers to realise sculptural wall or ceiling features with the same lining system used for straight runs.

Finishing options for Modulo® MR include:

  • Edge Tape: Screenwood supports matching 1mm ABS edge tape (via New Age Veneers) available in widths of 22 mm, 38 mm and 54 mm, to neatly finish exposed panel edges and maintain design continuity.
  • Other Trim Details:
    • Stix™ by Screenwood: Loose decorative timber battens in a range of sizes and profiles, pre-finished in NAVURBAN™ finishes, which integrate seamlessly with Modulo®, Soundlina® and Panels® ranges — or can be used independently as feature battens.
    • Matching Boards: Boards in the same NAVURBAN™ finish are available from New Age Veneers (NAV) in a broad thickness range (3 mm to 50 mm) for matching joinery or details.

Aluminium Angles / Shadowline Trim: Supplied by others, standard aluminium angles are commonly used for shadowline detailing or framing around Modulo® panels. Please refer to the technical gallery on our website for examples of finishing details.

Absolutely. Modulo® MR — like all Screenwood architectural linings — is proudly designed and manufactured in Australia. Screenwood’s technology and production are located in Kirrawee, NSW. This local manufacturing ensures tight quality control, compliance with Australian building standards, shorter lead-times, and better support for domestic industry and supply chains.

Modulo® MR offers a high degree of flexibility to meet custom project requirements. The panels may be cut, shaped and installed in different orientations (vertical or horizontal) to suit your design. Designers can mix finishes, combine different panel profiles, and create custom feature walls or ceilings — while maintaining consistent alignment and seamless jointing. Because the system is prefinished, the visual finish remains consistent across panels and profiles. This customisation capability allows Modulo® MR to adapt to diverse architectural visions without sacrificing functionality or aesthetic integrity.

To create a mitred end on Modulo® MR panels, follow these steps:

  1. Cut the panel end (horizontally or vertically depending on the end that requires finishing) using a panel/table saw.
  2. Make a 45° cut on the first panel.
  3. You will need a second panel to cut the matching 45° section for joining.

Use a good quality PVA or polyurethane wood glue to adhere the mitred sections.

This method ensures a clean, precision mitre joint without disrupting the tongue-and-groove system. Note: trimming and gluing should be executed by a qualified tradesperson experienced with MDF panel systems.

All Screenwood products, including Modulo® MR, are manufactured to order in our Kirrawee, NSW facility. Once your order is received, production is typically completed within 10 – 15 working days. If your project has specific deadlines or requires expedited lead times, please contact our friendly office team — we’re happy to discuss options to accommodate your schedule.

While Modulo® MR is manufactured from moisture-resistant (MR) MDF, it is not designed for exposed wet-area applications. The exposed end grain must not be left in contact with water or excessive moisture. Section ends should be properly sealed in any installation where accidental water or moisture ingress is a risk. In installations subject to water, condensation or high-moisture conditions, we recommend applying a water-based polyurethane clear sealer (for example, Cabot’s Cabothane Clear) to protect the exposed MDF sections. For fully wet or external areas, consider our alternative aluminium Modulo® Group 1 option or other fire/acoustic-rated systems.

Modulo® MR panels are supplied in standard lengths of 2.7 m, 3.6 m or 5.4 m. If your installation requires a height or length exceeding 5.4 m, we recommend the following:

  • If a straight join is desired as a deliberate design feature, Screenwood recommends an expressed joint of 5-10 mm, where joins are required.
    • An expressed joint is a deliberate design element creating a visible join line.
    • An expansion or movement joint is an assembly designed to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of building materials.
Planning jointing and expansions correctly ensures long-term alignment, performance and visual integrity.

In ceiling applications where runs exceed 5.4m Panels may be butt-joined where required — provided the alignment of adjoining panels is perfect to achieve a seamless join. Butt joints should be staggered where possible to avoid unsightly continuous joint lines.

NAVURBAN™ finishes applied to Modulo® MR are designed for simple maintenance. To clean, use a soft damp cloth with mild soap and warm water. Avoid the use of abrasive cleaners, powders, scouring pads, steel wool or sandpaper—these can damage the decorative film surface and make it more susceptible to staining. The low-maintenance aspect of NAVURBAN™ supports the efficiency-driven ethos of the product.
